The LESS.app is great and you're running as soon as you download it. It makes it so easy to listen to a directory and auto compile while you are saving, but I tend to get confused sometimes as to what I'm compiling so I like to manually compile which is probably why I also enjoy the convenience of the ruby gem that also makes it a snap.

> gem install less
> lessc master.less > ../css/styles.css

BOOM, bang, magic ....

I love the fact that you can mix vanilla css with less/javascript and basically compile one less file

### master.less ###
@import "lib/main.less";@import "lib/ui-layout.less";@import "lib/jquery-ui-1.8.15.custom.less";@import "lib/datatables/datatables.less";@import "lib/common.less";@input_width:               210px;@input_width_small:         @input_width - 60;@select_input_width:        (@input_width + 10);@select_input_width_small: (@select_input_width - 60);@g_white:                           #FFFFFF;@g_gray_02:                         #F9F9F9;@g_gray_04:                         #F5F5F5;@g_gray_2_04:                       #F6F6F6;@g_gray_05:                         #F3F3F3;@g_gray_06:                         #F0F0F0;@g_gray_07:                         #EEEEEE;@g_gray_11:                         #E2E2E2;

Re: Gillmor on SOPA: It’s not about piracy

I don't think its centralization vs decentralization. From my experience building decentralized social networks http://ostatus.org/2010/08/16/... http://www.victusspiritus.com/... its my opinion that a centralized web is actually better.

However, its all about who controls that centralization. With facebook, google+, and twitter, you can choose where you want to centralize your data. If SOPA et al. passes, that choice goes away

Re: SOPA tabled for now

I'm disappointed, I was kinda looking forwards to watching the inevitable revolution that would ensue

Re: Experimenting with LESS

Totally. I looked at SASS and think LESS is easier to pick up.

Re: Experimenting with LESS

IMHO i think LESS is more modern than SASS, its much clearer and more widely adopted I think

Re: Comments

I value them as well, and I'm trying to make a better effort to actually leave them in 2012! Too often, I'm staying in my own sandbox and just hoping someone will come join me! :)

I think I'm definitely guilty of placing a bit too much importance on comments; after all, if you're writing a blog you like and you enjoy what you do, that should be enough. But there are times when we all hope for some kind of feedback.

Trouble is, most people don't have the time to comment on everything they see, and thanks to RSS and email subscriptions, people sometimes read what you write without ever visiting your site. I have a real problem with that, but it seems to be something of a necessary evil.

Re: WordPress over IM

Doesn't look like Disqus hooks into this yet, even with comment sync between D and WordPress. Worth looking into.

Replies by XMPP are the next logical step, but would probably run into problems with third-party comment solutions (like we're seeing with Disqus comments).

Re: WordPress over IM

Since you use Disqus, will I get any notifications from comments here?
At Collecta we got the full WP.com feed as XMPP. Having Jetpack-powered blogs included would have been awesome. As in you can't enforce patent theft very well outside the US, especially in Asia & SE Asia.

And this is a lucrative line of work. I mean Microsoft is making $3 million dollars a day off of Android because of their patent trolling... And record company associations get away with terrorizing poor people and collecting royalties on behalf of musicians they sometimes don't even represent... And the musicians they do represent never see any of that money becaue of contracting gimmicks.

Seems that sleezeball opportunists making money off the hard work of others is quite a popular line of work these days. Not sure what's gonna change that? Maybe Anonymous? It's a systemic problem and it has to get way more outrageous before it gets better!

Re: Andy Paras, Social Journalist

Thank you, buddy.I appreciate all of your help.

Re: Where have all the custom themes gone?

I really hope that it isn't turning into a "cookie-cutter" theme/template-only web. I know enough to get a self hosted blog going, but wouldn't want to invest the time in writing a theme when I can find one that suits my needs in a fraction of the time.
